Neil: Every day is different on the road . First of all though it’s Sunday
The bells of Melk start ringing half an hour before 09.00 . We decide to join mass . A beautiful service in a stunning Benedictine monastery. Although we cannot understand any of the words it is still very moving .Many of the older people are in traditional dress.
Today we have just 50 km to cycle as we are going through the Wachau valley the prime wine growing area . Lots to see including a Palaeolithic fertility god , it was discovered in 1908 when the railway was built . The original is 11cm high and in Vienna it is 30, 000 years old .
Next we find our own Richard the Lionheart was incarcerated in Durnstein for 3 months here in the way back from a crusade . A large ransom was secured to effect his release.
The road was closed for the Wachua marathon which made for interesting watching . We felt a bit guilty speeding by ! Very humid today and odd drops of rain
