Neil: On we go enjoying rural Slovakia.Travelling on roads a bit today . The dykes are lovely but give you no idea of how people live . Lots of small bungalows and very quiet villages and difficult names to pronounce.
Cyclists always talk about the weather! Suddenly we have wind , strong wind from the north west . We are going east where we would eventually reach Ukraine . When we have the wind behind we feel superhuman.
In trying to avoid a gravel track we end up on a huge trunk road with huge lorries . A pretty nerve racking 7km with buffeting wind . We get back to dykes !
I learn that Slovakia makes more cars per capita than any other country in the world. They have 9 languages and an alphabet of 40 !
We keep meeting fellow cyclists which we bump into . Last couple of days we have shared a few beers with and Aussie and a German in their 60’s . They have been friends for 20 years . I had better get down stairs and join them !
Some fascinating entries. The way so many parts of the Danube seem to have been reshaped and canalised is interesting. Are these alterations made to suit the locality exclusively or is there an overarching body that oversees them? I could imagine the impact one change could have either upstream or downstream to communities and to agriculture.
Are you conscious of travelling slightly downhill? Is the wind generally behind you propelling you?

Yes indeed a slight downhill all the time , not perceptible really. The river has been responsible for catastrophic flooding in the past so often is dammed to prevent this
