Neil: Postman Pat was eulogised when I was at university as someone who had the right work life balance.
Well today I found his rival. We left our beautiful Gasthaus and cycled just 200 metres to our first ferry across the Danube . The ferry was in and waiting . The ferry man was fishing off the back of the small ferry. He acknowledged us but carried on fishing for 3-4 minutes. Nothing need to be done in a hurry . The view from the Ferry suited the situation, not a breath of wind and whispy mist and Stygian woods .
We then cycled 18 kilometres without seeing a soul with the road hugging the shore line . Our only accompanying life were swans half of whom were asleep .
Gradually the steep wooded shore gave way to farm land and Asbach and a coffee. We had a long way to go today so we made use of the ‘Donau Bus’ a super little ferry that took us to Linz. Our destination tonight is Mauthausen which is known for the concentration camp which can be visited. We did not . Our accommodation is a farmhouse tonight with a delightful host who loves having cyclists. All in all another varied day .

Our 2nd ferry of the day
Leaving Ottensheim
We were cycling through Linz, a university town, and came across this man practicing his alpine horn underneath a motorway. He converted our industrial surroundings into something rather serene.

Ceri: the latter part of the day was cycling along the Danube through heavy industrialised areas, so we’re looking forward to returning to beauty tomorrow.
